Overview
There are over 1,000 species of woody, perennial grasses known as bamboo. All bamboos grow, thrive, flower, produce seed and die. Some varieties take 120 years to produce seeds in their natural habitat. Bamboo plants are widespread throughout the world.

Size
Bamboo offers a variety of forms from low shrubs 4 feet tall to towering giant trees 100 feet tall.

Geography
Bamboo plants thrive at sea level to 14,000 feet in elevation. These grasses are found in places including China, Hawaii and South America.

The Facts
Bamboo that forms dense, impenetrable clumps are native to tropical countries like Indonesia, Burma, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Thailand and southern China.

Features
Mountain bamboos, which survive in areas with freezing winters, originate in the Himalayas and the Andes mountains.

Considerations
Spreading bamboos are bamboo plants that spread through underground stems. This type of bamboo is native to temperate climates of Japan, northern China and Siberia.

History
The dense forest of Phyllostachys nigra bamboo flourishes in the rain forest of east Maui, Hawaii. It spreads by producing suckers from its roots. This Chinese species was discovered invading the island of Oahu in 1951.
